The Council Youth Advisory Committee (YAC) is for young people age 14-17 years living in the Huon Valley. There are eight spaces on the Committee with nominations in November and successful applicants advised in January each year. Existing members are able to reapply.
Meetings are conducted on a monthly basis and held in the Council Chambers. Being a member of the Youth Advisory Committee also includes some weekend events and activities.
The Huon Valley YAC is an opportunity for young people to be involved in their community, provide a voice for other young people and to organise events and activities for other young people in the Huon Valley.
YAC members are provided with experiences that assist in developing skills and knowledge relating to leadership, advocacy, event management and peer education.
The Youth Advisory Committee was established to:
- Consider a range of issues affecting young people throughout the Huon Valley
- Develop recommendations relating to youth issues for consideration by Council
- Consider and provide advice on any youth-related matter referred to it by Council
- Expend funds for the budget allocated for the committee (such expenditure is facilitated by Council officers and expended in accordance with established administrative procedures)
The committee is made up of eight members. It seeks to provide representation from each of the Huon Valley’s main towns.
