Nominations for the 2026 Huon Valley Council election open at 9am on Monday 7 September and close at 12 noon on Monday 21 September 2026. Nominations will be announced at 12 noon on Tuesday 22 September. From this election the Huon Valley Council will have seven elected members, including the mayor and deputy mayor, reduced from nine.
Nominating
To nominate you must be enrolled as an elector for the Huon Valley municipal area. Some people are disqualified from standing, including Council employees.
Nominations should, where possible, be lodged with the Tasmanian Electoral Commission. However, if it is easier for you to do so you can lodge nominations with a Council Officer. Please contact Council to arrange an appointment time if required.
You can nominate for councillor, mayor, deputy mayor, or a combination of these. The TEC’s candidate information page has the full eligibility requirements in the candidate handbook, along with nomination forms and the requirements for your candidate statement and photograph, which are published in every elector’s ballot pack.
Councillors are elected for a four-year term. Council meets monthly, generally on the last Wednesday of the month at 6pm, and councillors also serve on committees and attend workshops and community events. Councillors receive an allowance set under the Local Government Act 1993.
Campaigning
Read our election signage information page before putting up any signs — restrictions apply under both Council’s by-law and the planning scheme, and penalties apply for breaches.
If you need information from Council to support your nomination or campaign, use our candidate questions register so that all candidates receive the same information.
Candidates must lodge an electoral advertising return with the TEC within 45 days of the certificate of election being issued. This applies whether or not you are elected.
For general enquiries call Council on (03) 6264 0300. For nominations, eligibility and the conduct of the election, contact the Tasmanian Electoral Commission.
