All dogs over 6 months old must be registered with Council and microchipped. This is a legal requirement under the Dog Control Act 2000.

Registration helps us reunite you with your dog if it gets lost, and funds services like pounds, dog parks and compliance officers.

Registrations expire on 30 June each year. New dogs must be registered within 14 days of living at your address, including when you move to the Huon Valley.

How to register your dog

You can register online if your dog is sterilised, unsterilised, a working dog, or the first dog owned by a pensioner.

Before commencing your online registration, you will need the following information to hand:

  1. Your dog’s microchip number,
  2. Your dog’s details (name, gender, breed, colour, date of birth),
  3. Certificates of microchipping and desexing,
  4. Owner details,
  5. Pension Card information (to get the pension discount), and
  6. Credit card to pay the registration fee.

Once you’ve finished, we’ll email your tax invoice receipt and post your registration tag.

Good to know:

  • If the dog belongs to a child, register it in a parent’s or guardian’s name.
  • Your dog must wear its registration tag on its collar whenever it’s in a public place.
  • Replacement tags are available from Council’s Customer Service Centre.

  2. Return your completed and signed form with required documentation to:

  4. Once Council has received your completed registration form and full payment, we will issue you with a registration tag.

Changing or updating your dog registration details

It is your responsibility to ensure you keep your dog’s registration details up to date. If any of the below information changes, please notify Council within 14 days.

  • If you have changed your postal or residential address.
  • If you have changed your contact details – mobile or email address.
  • If you have moved out of the Huon Valley.
  • If you are no longer the owner of the dog.
  • If your dog has passed away.
  • If your dog is lost, stolen or permanently removed from your home.
  • If your dog has been desexed.

Keeping more than two dogs

To keep more than 2 dogs (or more than 4 working dogs) over 6 months old, you need a Licence to Keep Dogs. Apply before you bring any extra dogs home.
