Strategic planning guides how the Huon Valley grows and changes over time, shaping decisions about housing, infrastructure, employment and the character of our townships. It ranges from the region-wide Land Use and Development Strategy through to plans for specific precincts and townships.
Each project is shaped by community input. Once adopted by Council, these plans guide day-to-day planning decisions, future amendments to the Tasmanian Planning Scheme, infrastructure planning and grant funding applications.
Below you’ll find completed strategies and plans already guiding Council’s work, along with projects currently underway and open for community input.
Completed projects
Huon Valley Land Use and Development Strategy (LUDS)
Council’s overarching strategy for land use across the Huon Valley, guiding land use decision in the long term. Adopted March 2024 and the foundation for every project below.
Huonville Residential and Commercial Precinct Structure Plan
A 20-year precinct plan for directing growth in Huonville’s largest greenfield residential area, alongside a retrofit and revitalisation plan for the commercial component of Main Street. Adopted February 2026.
Rural Living Densification Study and Assessment Matrix
A do it yourself Rural Living densification suitability assessment matrix for landowners and communities to use to understand appropriateness of higher density Rural Living classes being applied to their place, and to prepare clearer planning scheme amendment applications for submission to the Tasmanian Planning Scheme. Adopted February 2026.
Huon Valley Housing Plan
Addresses the Valley’s need for more affordable and diverse housing, and the actions Council can take to support it. It is an addendum to the LUDS, providing more detailed housing data informed actions and deliverables that will be incorporated into all future land use structure plans
Projects underway
Cygnet Township Structure Plan — This structure plan provides strategic direction for Cygnet’s development over the next 20 years and details planning actions to ensure outcomes are delivered through the Huon Valley Local Provision Schedule of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme
Huonville ReImagined: Crafting a Future Huonville — supported by $4.69 million from the Australian Government’s regional Precincts and Partnerships Program, this project delivers a business case and master plan for five precincts across Huonville. This is a continuation of the work program that delivered the Huonville Residential and Commerical Structure Plan.
