The Huon Valley Council’s Election and Caretaker Period Policy GOV-CORP 021 acknowledges that all candidates for the Offices of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Councillors will be treated equally, fairly and without discrimination.
The following protocols apply to the relationship between the Council and candidates during the election and caretaker period that has commenced 5 August 2026:
- The Council will not supply or make available resources or facilities that would advantage a candidate other than in a manner in which a normal member of the public would have those made available to them.
- The Council will provide assistance, information and advice as part of the conduct of the Council election. It will be provided and made accessible equally to all candidates.
- Councillors will continue to receive information necessary to perform their roles, however, neither Councillors nor candidates will receive information or advice from Council officers that may advantage them in the election.
- Information and briefing material supplied at the request of any candidate during the Election and Caretaker Period will relate only to factual matters or to current Council services which is accessible by the public.
- The information supplied will not relate to policy development, new projects or matters that are the subject of public or election debate or that might be perceived to be connected to a candidate’s election campaign.
- Requests for information by candidates that require significant Council resources to be devoted to a response may be refused at the sole discretion of the Chief Executive Officer.
Requests for information
A candidate who requests information relating to their election campaign must make a formal request in writing submitted through the following online form or by email to legal.pa@huonvalley.tas.gov.au.
Questions that are accepted for answer will be responded by Council directly to the candidate.
A copy of the question and answer provided will also be made available on the Candidate questions and answers page, so that all candidates have access to the information. The name of the requesting candidate will not be included.
