Huon Valley Council is seeking expressions of interest from landowners who could make good use of clean fill from our road maintenance work.

About the program

Each year, maintaining our roads, table drains and culverts produces clean fill such as natural soil, rock and gravel. Rather than carting it long distances, we would like to place it on local properties where it can be put to good use.

Why take part

Taking part benefits both you and your local road network.

  • Free fill, delivered and placed by Council crews
  • Ideal for levelling paddocks, filling gullies, raising low-lying ground or building hardstand areas
  • Lower haulage costs and less travel, supporting your local roads and drainage program
  • A simple arrangement, with support from Council every step of the way

What we’re looking for

We are interested in properties throughout the Huon Valley, ideally close to townships and the road network.

Two ways to take part

  • Small-scale sites: up to 100 tonnes per property each calendar year, under the Environment Protection Authority’s (EPA) Approved Management Method
  • Larger sites: higher volumes may be possible where an environmental authority under the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA) is in place – talk to us about your property

What you should know

Before you register, please note the following.

  • Our clean fill is roadside drainage material, such as gravel and soil, removed to keep water flowing freely
  • All fill is free of contaminants, controlled waste (such as asbestos), weeds and disease
  • As the landowner, you are responsible for material accepted onto your land – we will provide guidance and source checks
  • We will keep a record of all fill we place on your property
  • Some sites may need a planning permit – we will help you check before any fill is placed
  • We will deliver and place fill on request, when available, but will not compact it or build to any specification or standard

The amount of fill you can receive depends on your site.

How to register your interest

Email hvc@huonvalley.tas.gov.au (attention: Works Department) with:

  • your name and contact details
  • the property address
  • a short description of where you would like fill placed and roughly how much.

This is an expression of interest only. Registering does not guarantee your property will be selected. All sites are subject to a suitability assessment and any required planning and environmental approvals.
