The Huon Valley Council is pleased to announce the projects it will undertake using Phase 2 funding from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program.

The LRCI Program has been provided by the Australian Government to fund more construction projects in local communities across Australia and help communities to recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Phase 2 of the program is being delivered to respond to the ongoing economic impacts of the pandemic by supporting local jobs and the building industry.

“Council has selected three larger projects under the program which will deliver immediate benefits for our community and support our long-term plans. We expect all three projects to be completed by 31 December 2021,” said Huon Valley Council Mayor Bec Enders.

Using Phase 2 funds, Council will be contributing an extra $320,000 to construct a major Southern Tasmanian boating destination in Dover.

“The Dover Marine Facility Upgrade Project includes a new jetty, a second boat ramp, more parking, and road alignment to improve the offerings and access of this idyllic site for our local marine enthusiasts as well as travellers.”

“This contribution will combine with funding from Marine and Safety Tasmania (MAST), as well as $60,000 Council allocated under Phase 1 of the LRCI program, to help complete MAST’s Master Plan for the existing Dover Esplanade boat ramp site. This is a total contribution from Council of $380,000 towards the Dover Esplanade boat ramp project.

Phase 2 funding will also be used to construct a footpath and stormwater system along Wilmot Road. The footpath will be built where the hedge has been removed, between Tennis Court Road and the recreation ground driveway.

“The new footpath and hedge removal are part of the Huonville Recreation Ground Master Plan,” said Cr Enders. “We are already receiving a lot of positive feedback about the area since the hedge was removed, with community members of all ages commenting that it looks and feels more open and inviting now. The new footpath will also make the area look tidier and we are confident the path will be used by many in our community.”

Council is also delighted to be able to use Phase 2 funds to provide the Cygnet community with a lift in the Cygnet Town Hall.

“The addition of a lift will make the upstairs area in the Town Hall more accessible where people of all mobilities can enjoy the space in future,” said Cr Enders.
