Huon Valley Council has launched a free food waste drop-off trial at the Southbridge (Huonville) Waste Transfer Station, giving households an extra way to keep food scraps out of landfill.

Food waste makes up around one third of household general waste in the Huon Valley. Keeping food scraps out of landfill is one of the easiest ways reduce environmental impact and save money on waste costs.

What you can drop off:

  • Any food
  • Fruit and vegetable scraps
  • Eggshells
  • Bones
  • Meat
  • Dairy
  • Spoiled leftovers
  • Certified compostable bin liners (AS 4736 or AS 5810)

What to leave out:

  • Compostable packaging
  • Food still in packaging
  • Standard plastic bin liners
  • Uncertified bin liners (e.g. biodegradable or plant-based)
  • Garden waste
  • Pet waste (e.g. kitty litter and dog poo)
  • Any other materials

Using bin liners

Certified compostable bin liners are accepted to help with transporting food scraps. Look for liners carrying one of the following Australian certification labels:

Green logo with two leaves above a curved shape, symbolizing compostability. Text below reads Compostable, AS 4736, and ABAX 9999.
A green and white icon of a container with two circular arrows, labeled Home Compostable with certification code AS 5810 ABAX 9999 underneath.
  • AS 4736 — certified compostable in industrial facilities
  • AS 5810 — certified home compostable

Standard plastic and uncertified ‘green’ bin liners (e.g. biodegradeable or plant-based) cannot be composted and must not be used.

We encourage all Huon Valley households to get involved — next time you visit the Southbridge Waste Transfer Station, bring your food scraps along and help make a difference.

This trial is part of Council’s ongoing work to find the best food waste solution for the Huon Valley.
