Huon Valley Council delivered another successful Rev It Up program this week, bringing together 123 grade 6 students from primary schools across the Huon Valley for a day of health and wellbeing education.

Now in its 12th year, the Council-run program gave students the chance to learn new skills, meet new friends, and connect with the community organisations that support them as they head off to high school.

Huon Valley Acting Mayor Toby Thorpe said the day gave students a valuable head start on skills they’ll carry well beyond the classroom.

“High school brings a lot of change, and days like this help students feel more confident. They walked away with practical knowledge, a few laughs, and a better sense of the people and services in our community who are there to help them,” Acting Mayor Thorpe said.

Students took part in a range of workshops throughout the day. Pulse Youth Health ran a session on slime-making and emotional self-regulation, while the Cancer Council covered sun safety. Council’s Climate Change Officer led a session on dark skies, and Water Watch introduced students to water bugs found in local waterways. The school nurses delivered a session on self-care, and the Huon Community Health Centre Dental Team ran a workshop on dental health. QuitMob and the Flinders Island Aboriginal Association spoke to students about the harms of second-hand cigarette smoke and vape vapour, and further sessions were delivered by Headspace, Courtney Moretti Dietetics, Run Move Connect, and Anglicare, which covered gambling education.

The event was made possible with the support of Huon Valley PCYC, Huonville High School, Woolworths, R & R Smith, the Lions Club of Huon Inc., and volunteers from Council and the Huon Community Health Centre.
