A severe weather warning remains in place for heavy rainfall and damaging winds in Southern Tasmania including the Huon Valley, greater Hobart and parts of the East Coast, with the most dangerous weather expected to occur during the early hours of Friday (tomorrow).

The State Emergency Service is standing up both a Regional and State Operations Centre in Southern Tasmania from midnight tonight, ahead of the forecast severe weather.

SES Acting Director Leon Smith said Tasmanians, particularly those in the South of the state, need to be prepared for heavy rains and flooding.

“From a community preparedness perspective, it’s important for people to understand there will an be impact from rain, but to what extent we can’t categorically say at this point,” he said.

“We know there is a particular risk of moderate to major flooding in the Huon Valley, but other areas should not be complacent.”

“With potential thunderstorm activity, we can also expect flash flooding, but we can’t predict exactly where this may occur.”

“We’re anticipating we may start to receive calls for assistance in the early hours of Friday morning, based on the forecast.”

“In such adverse conditions, if you don’t need to leave your home, don’t do it.”

“We’re taking a proactive approach, and we need community members to do so as well.”

Preparation tips:

Check the Bureau of Meteorology’s website for the latest weather forecast and warnings

Check that family and neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable, are aware of warnings and have a plan in place

Clear drains and gutters of debris so they flow freely

Tie down loose items like outdoor furniture and play equipment

Have a plan for managing pets and livestock

Be prepared for power outages
