Food waste makes up around one third of household general waste in the Huon Valley. Keeping food scraps out of landfill is one of the easiest ways to reduce environmental impact and save on waste costs.
Huon Valley Council offers a free food waste drop-off trial at the Southbridge (Huonville) Waste Transfer Station, giving households an extra way to keep food scraps out of landfill.
What you can drop off: any food, fruit and vegetable scraps, eggshells, bones, meat, dairy, spoiled leftovers, and certified compostable bin liners (AS 4736 or AS 5810).
What to leave out: compostable packaging, food still in packaging, standard plastic bin liners, uncertified bin liners (e.g. biodegradable or plant-based), garden waste, pet waste (e.g. kitty litter and dog poo), and any other materials.
Using bin liners: certified compostable bin liners are accepted to help with transporting food scraps. Look for one of the following Australian certification labels: AS 4736 (certified compostable in industrial facilities) or AS 5810 (certified home compostable). Standard plastic and uncertified ‘green’ bin liners (e.g. biodegradable or plant-based) cannot be composted and must not be used.
