(Nassella trichotoma)
A suspected new weed has been found in the Huon Valley.
Serrated tussock spreads quickly, is very hard to control, and can turn native grasslands and pastures into unusable land. One plant can produce around 100,000 seeds a year, spread by wind, livestock and machinery.
Have you seen it?
- Dense tussock up to about 70cm tall
- Purple seed heads that turn golden brown as they mature
- Leaves look smooth but feel rough, and are tightly rolled
- It’s easy to mistake for a native grass. Check the seeds to tell the difference (see photo below)
- If a tussock looks out of place, report it

How to report it
- Take photos of the whole plant, plus close-ups of any seeds or flowers and the leaf bases
- Email the photos and location to nrm@huonvalley.tas.gov.au
- No photos? Please let us know anyway.
