Got an old TV or computer monitor gathering dust in the shed? Huon Valley Council has partnered with Resource Work Cooperative on a 12-month trial to find better ways to recycle these hard-to-process items.
The trial is already underway and residents can drop off unwanted TVs and monitors – along with any cables and remotes – at all three of Council’s waste transfer stations: Southbridge (Huonville), Cygnet and Dover. Items collected across the municipality will be brought together at Southbridge before being sent on for assessment and processing.
TVs and monitors are notoriously difficult to recycle. Their size and the amount of hard-to-recycle plastic they contain (known as HIPS and ABS) mean the cost of processing them often outweighs the value of the materials recovered. This trial aims to change that by testing what’s possible.
Over the next 12 months, Resource Work Cooperative will track what’s collected, how items are processed, how much material can be recovered, and where that material ends up. Wherever possible, TVs and monitors still in good condition will be safety tested and prepared for reuse. Items that can’t be reused will be carefully dismantled so their materials can be recovered.
The findings will help determine whether TV and monitor recycling can become a practical long-term service in Tasmania, and could support the recovery of other difficult-to-process items in future.
