Huon Valley’s newest electric vehicle fast charger launched in Geeveston

Yesterday, the Huon Valley Council officially launched the Huon Valley’s newest electric vehicle (EV) fast charging station at a media event attended by Nic Street MP, Mayor Bec Enders, Councillors, Acting General Manager Matthew Grimsey, and staff.

The installation comes after Council was successful in securing a major $50,000 grant to install an EV fast-charging station for public use through the Tasmanian Government’s ChargeSmart Grants Program.

“Providing fast and reliable charging options for residents and visitors to the Valley is crucial for encouraging Tasmanians to drive an electric vehicle and reduce their carbon footprint.”

“Council is pleased to be delivering on our Cities Power Partnership action pledge to provide EV charging facilities in the Huon Valley,” said Huon Valley Council Mayor Bec Enders. “This is part of our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as a community.

Located in the car park behind the Geeveston Town Hall, at the gateway to the Far South, the fast charger will help extend the range of the Huon Valley’s EV charging network through to our furthest point, Cockle Creek.

“The new fast charger will also help place the Huon Valley as a key location in Tasmania’s growing network of charging stations for electric vehicles,” said Cr Enders.

Cities Power Partnership acting director Dr Portia Odell congratulated Council on the project. “This is a significant step in steering the community away from fossil fuel-driven car culture and creating a cleaner, healthier place to live and work,” said Dr Odell.

“Local governments are a huge driver towards clean, effective transport and it’s fantastic to see Huon Valley slam the brakes on Australia’s worsening transport pollution problem.”

Council thanks the Tasmanian Government for funding the installation and actively supporting the uptake of EVs state-wide.
