Huon Valley Kerbside Waste Collection Update

Huon Valley Council has appointed JJ’s Waste and Recycling for a 3-year contract to service kerbside bins, following public tender for the service.

From 17 April 2023, the new service will include optimised routes over an extended range, reflecting residential growth in the Huon Valley. The contract also focuses on customer service, with improved systems to identify missed bins and educate users on issues such as bin contamination and incorrect placement.

Kerbside extension areas identified to the west of the Huon River will commence from 17 April 2023. The existing route will be extended up to the following addresses:

431 Arve Road, Geeveston

197 Kermandie River Road, Geeveston

All of Esperance Coast Road

7556 Huon Highway, Strathblane

288 Narrows Road, Strathblane.

New kerbside bins will be distributed to these locations between 03 April 2023 and 14 April 2023. Kerbside charges will be included on future rates notices for residents receiving these services.

To accommodate these routes, fortnightly recycling collections will move to an alternating schedule across the municipality from 17 April 2023. In line with this schedule, some properties will have their recycling collected on ‘week 1’ of the schedule, and the others on ‘week 2’.

All residents on extension routes or already using kerbside bins will receive a letter outlining their collection day and recycling collection week. An interactive collection map will be made available on council’s website.

To balance extensions of the kerbside service, from 17 April 2023 the service day will move to a Monday collection for:

All Geeveston addresses

Phillips Road, Cairns Bay

Scotts Road, Cairns Bay

Beauty View Road, Huonville

Kerbside extension areas identified to the east of the Huon River will be implemented following consultation with residents in those areas. Consultation will commence in May 2023.

Additionally, Council is assessing the feasibility of Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) as a new kerbside service.
