Huon Valley Council is making it simpler for residents to report dog attacks and access information on responsible dog ownership, with new signage being installed at all designated off-lead areas across the valley, backed by a fully updated online resource hub.

Mayor Sally Doyle said the initiative is about supporting the community with the right information at the right time. “The vast majority of dog owners in our community are doing a wonderful job, and we want to make it as easy as possible for everyone to understand the rules, access resources, and enjoy our beautiful, shared spaces with their dogs.”

Council’s message to the community is clear: good dogs come from responsible dog owners. Whether on or off the lead, every owner plays a vital role in keeping shared spaces safe and welcoming for all.

The new signs display clear, simple rules for all users of dog exercise areas, helping ensure those spaces remain enjoyable for everyone. Each sign features a QR code giving visitors instant access to Council’s incident report form directly from their phone — making it easy to report an incident on the spot.

To further support the community, Council has launched a fully refreshed Dog Management web hub at huonvalley.tas.gov.au/dog-management, bringing together everything dog owners and community members need to know. The updated hub covers registration and microchipping requirements, legal responsibilities at home and in public, off-lead exercise areas, and what to do if a dog attack or barking complaint occurs. The incident report form is now easier than ever to find, allowing residents to raise concerns quickly and directly.

An education campaign running alongside the signage rollout will provide practical guidance on what responsible dog ownership looks like in both on-lead and off-lead settings.

Council encourages all dog owners and community members to visit the updated hub and familiarise themselves with local rules.
