Huon Valley Council is inviting the community to provide feedback on the draft Cygnet Township Structure Plan, a landmark document that will shape the towns future for the next 20 years.

Following extensive community consultation throughout 2025, Council has worked with consultants to develop the draft Structure Plan and is now calling on residents, ratepayers and visitors to have their say.

The consultation process that informed the draft plan was one of the most significant in the region’s recent history. One in five local ratepayers, 454 adults, contributed their ideas and aspirations for Cygnet’s future through surveys, conversations, business engagement and a design workshop. When input from local school students is included, a remarkable 770 community members took part in the process.

Mayor Sally Doyle said the response from the community had been incredible. “The people of Cygnet have always had a strong sense of what makes their town so special, and that really shone through in the consultation process. This draft Structure Plan reflects the voices of hundreds of community members, and we’re excited to share it and hear what people think.”

Council is particularly seeking community feedback on whether the draft plan has got it right when it comes to the vision for Cygnet and its long-term development, and the future of key sites including the Old School Farm and former Council Depot, the Caravan Park site and the Mary Street precinct.

Mayor Doyle encouraged everyone with a connection to Cygnet to get involved. “This is your community and your future. Whether you’ve lived in Cygnet your whole life or you’re new to the area, we want to hear from you. The more voices we hear, the better the plan will be.”

The Structure Plan builds on the direction set by the community through the Huon Valley Community Vision, Huon Valley Land Use and Development Strategy, Community Views Survey and the Liveability Framework and incorporates ideas and feedback already gathered through those important processes.

Once finalised, the Cygnet Township Structure Plan will be embedded in the planning scheme, providing clear guidance on future housing development, streets, public spaces, heritage protection, services and community facilities — delivering on what locals have been asking for.
