Huon Valley Council is pleased to announce the successful recipients of the 2026 Environment Grant Program, supporting the outstanding work of local community groups dedicated to protecting and restoring our region’s precious natural environments.

Three grassroots projects have been awarded funding through Council’s annual grant program, to support local care groups in delivering meaningful environmental outcomes across the Huon Valley.

The Abels Bay/Eggs and Bacon Bay Coastcare Group will receive funding to extend their important Seagrass Monitoring project through a second full summer monitoring season across four local bays. Working alongside UTAS/IMAS researcher Kelsie Fractal, the project will build community capacity to independently monitor this vital blue-carbon habitat while generating valuable publicly available data.

The Friends of Huon Island will use their grant to commission a comprehensive island-wide vegetation survey, evaluating more than a decade of dedicated volunteer restoration work. Building on a 2014 baseline assessment, the project will map ecological progress and guide the next phase of strategic restoration for coastal habitats supporting threatened species. The group will also partner with Council’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) Team to deliver a community workshop showcasing their findings.

Finally, the Friends of Randalls Bay will receive $500 to purchase tools and materials to support their well-attended volunteer working bees, improving the safety and effectiveness of ongoing weed control and rehabilitation works at Randalls Bay.

Council’s NRM team will provide ongoing technical support and monitoring to all grant recipients to ensure the best possible outcomes for our local environment.

Congratulations to all three groups on their successful applications — your commitment to caring for the Huon Valley’s natural landscapes is truly inspiring.

This will be the final round of the NRM Environment Grant Program which in future years will be incorporated into the new Community Liveability Fund currently open for applications Community Liveability Fund – Huon Valley Council
