Huon Valley Council has adopted the Cygnet Township Structure Plan, a 20-year vision for the town shaped by the Cygnet community.
“People really turned out for this one and it shows,” Mayor Sally Doyle said. I couldn’t be prouder of how engaged our community was, and I want to say a genuine thank you to everyone who contributed.”
More than 1,000 community members and stakeholders had their say, including 711 adults — around 40% of Cygnet ratepayers — through drop-in sessions, surveys, workshops, and written submissions.
That feedback painted a clear picture: people want more affordable, diverse housing, safer streets, better active transport, and a town that keeps its village charm and heritage as it grows.
Prepared with Niche Planning Studio, the plan sets a vision for Cygnet as a thriving rural village where community, culture and Country stay front and centre — covering homes, getting around, nature, heritage, local business, and practical services like water, power and waste.
With the plan now adopted, Council can start moving on priority actions within future budgets. It will also be implemented through Local Provisions Schedule amendments including Specific Area Plans, which will go through public exhibition and Tasmanian Planning Commission review, giving everyone another chance to have their say.
“This is a great moment for Cygnet,” Mayor Doyle said. “It gives everyone – residents, landowners, local businesses – a clearer sense of where things are heading, while protecting what makes this town so special.”
The plan is part of Council’s commitment to thoughtful growth across the Valley, following the Huonville Residential and Commercial Precinct Structure Plan and Rural Living Densification Study. Huonville Reimagined is next, working towards business cases and master plans for key precincts.
