The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Program has reached an important milestone, with
concept designs now available for community viewing.

The designs cover Lymington Road widening, new and extended off-street parking, on-street
disability parking, centreline shifting, and additional wombat crossings— aimed at improving
parking, traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and accessibility in Cygnet.

Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle said, “These concept designs are an important milestone for
Cygnet. We’re focused on practical improvements that make it safer and easier to move
around town—whether you’re walking, driving, shopping, or visiting.”

“One of the strongest messages we’ve heard is that people want a calmer, safer town centre
while keeping Cygnet welcoming and accessible. This program is about delivering exactly
that,” Mayor Doyle said.

Key elements of the program include:

  • Lymington Road widening – A 480-metre section between the footbridge and the
Cannery will be widened to allow a centreline to be marked, improving safety and
    clarity for all road users.
  • New wombat crossings – Additional crossings in front of the old post office at Golden
Valley Rd and at Red Velvet Lounge will complement the existing Town Hall crossing
and 40km speed limit, making the town centre safer for pedestrians.
  • Accessible parking bays – New on-street spaces will improve accessibility for mobility
impaired visitors at intervals along Mary Street.
  • Mary Street centreline realignment – Relocated to better accommodate safe passing
    of vehicles.
  • Town Hall carpark extension creating over 100 new all-day spaces, additional
accessible spaces and provision for increased EV charging spaces.
  • Mary Street carpark – a new access road and carpark next to the BP and the future
ambulance station will also provide off-street parking, and accessible EV charging
points, all conveniently located opposite a bus stop.

The project does not include a new road or bypass which Council understands will disappoint
some in the community. The project delivers financially viable improvements that align with
road usage data, community feedback from recent speed reduction, pedestrian crossing, and
township structure plan consultations.

The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Program and Mary Street upgrades have been shaped
by, and directly contribute to, the broader Cygnet Structure Plan. They deliver short and
medium-term safety priorities now, while the Structure Plan and its supporting planning tools
will guide longer-term road and footpath infrastructure as Cygnet grows, ensuring future
development supports a liveable township.

The Cygnet Township Safety Upgrade Project is supported by the Tasmanian Government
through the Department of State Growth and the overall program is expected to be completed
by 2028.
