Huon Valley Medical Services has capped off an extraordinary year, with more than 23,600 appointments delivered in the 12 months to the end of June 2026 – the highest number of appointments recorded in any 12-month period to date.
Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle said this milestone reflects the dedication of our entire medical team, the community’s trust in the service and the investment Huon Valley Council continues to make towards quality and sustainable local healthcare.
“This has been a fantastic year for healthcare in the Huon Valley. Passing a record number of appointments, moving to full bulk billing at Dover and Geeveston, and growing our GP team are all things our community should feel really proud of. It means more people can see a doctor close to home, without the added stress of out-of-pocket costs, and that matters enormously for families right across the Valley.”
- A record number of appointments. More than 23,600 appointments were delivered in the 12 months to the end of June 2026 – the most in any 12-month period.
- A move to bulk billing. All appointments at our Dover and Geeveston Medical Centres are now bulk billed, meaning patients can access care with no out-of-pocket costs.
- A stronger medical team. The team has grown significantly this year, with three new GP Registrars joining at the beginning of the year and Dr Tim Andrewartha coming on board as a Fellowed GP – bringing the team to 10 employed doctors across the service. These additions significantly strengthen local capacity and support the long-term sustainability of services across the Valley.
- Geeveston Medical Centre expanded to three days a week, following sustained effort to recruit the staff needed to grow services in the township.
- The Huon Valley Women’s Health Clinic launched at Geeveston Medical Centre, offering monthly dedicated, longer format appointments for women’s health and reproductive care.
The expansion of Geeveston Medical Centre, including establishment of the Women’s Health Clinic were supported by funding from the Australian Government’s General Practice Incentive Fund through Primary Health Tasmania. This funding program helps address service gaps in smaller markets like Geeveston.
Huon Valley Council remains committed to building on this momentum and continuing to advocate for equitable, sustainable access to primary healthcare across the Huon Valley.
