Essential foreshore maintenance and upgrade works at Shipwrights Pontoon have been successfully completed. The new floating pontoon is now open and delivering a safer, more accessible and welcoming space for fishing, boating and water recreation.

The new pontoon replaces the original timber jetty, which was decommissioned in February 2022 due to age and deterioration. The new facility provides consistent, safe access to boats and watercraft at all tide and water levels, as it rises and falls with the changing river conditions.

Works completed

Associated foreshore improvements have also been finished, including:

  • Access track upgrades
  • Stormwater infrastructure installation
  • New signage and bollard installation

Community response

The project has been warmly welcomed by the community, with the Huon Yacht Club and local fishermen already enjoying the new facilities. The pontoon is supporting both local recreation and the visitor experience across the Huon Valley.

Project funding

The replacement works were co-funded by Maritime and Safety Tasmania (MAST), the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE) through a Better Fishing Grant, and the Tasmanian Government as part of their 2024 election commitment.

Construction update – Tuesday 20 January 2026

Essential foreshore maintenance and upgrade works are currently underway at Shipwrights Pontoon and will continue over the next two weeks. Our teams are completing critical improvements to enhance safety and functionality at the site.

Work includes upgrading the access track, installing stormwater infrastructure, and adding new signage and bollards across the foreshore.

Access to the floating pontoon jetty may be limited during this period. We recommend checking conditions before your visit and allowing extra time if you’re planning to use the facilities.

Works commenced 20 January 2026 and are scheduled for completion within two weeks.

Construction update – Monday 8 December 2025

Work on the new floating pontoon is progressing well, with delivery of the pontoon sections scheduled for this week. Photo update:

Workers operate a crane on a floating platform in a body of water, with construction equipment and materials nearby. The shoreline is visible in the foreground, and hills under a cloudy sky are in the background.

To ensure safe and efficient delivery and installation, the boat ramp and small jetty at Shipwrights Point will be closed to the public from 12:00 pm on Wednesday, 10 December, until close of business on Friday, 12 December.

The nearest alternative boat ramp is located at Franklin, just a 9‑minute drive from Shipwrights Point:

We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.
