Council is undertaking essential stormwater infrastructure upgrades in the Scenic Hill and Huonville areas. This project is part of Council’s commitment to protecting the community from flooding and enhancing drainage capacity across the region, while supporting vibrant and resilient towns and villages.

Project background

Following significant flooding events in 2022 that affected areas of the Huon Valley, including Scenic Hill and the Huon Highway at Huonville, Council engaged specialist engineers to investigate and model the affected catchments. The resulting reports identified mitigation options to reduce future flooding risk.

About the works

The project involves improving the capacity of the existing stormwater system by installing a new drainage network on the eastern side of Beauty View Drive. The works will extend through two properties at 21 Scenic Hill Road and 2770 Huon Highway, run under the Huon Highway, and connect to an outfall point south of the highway at 38 Coolstore Road.

The upgraded system is designed to manage severe weather events (5% AEP – 1 in 20 year storm) and significantly reduce future flooding damage to homes and properties in the area.

  • Expected commencement: October 2026
  • Expected completion: March 2027
  • Location: Scenic Hill and Huonville (Beauty View Drive, Huon Highway corridor)

Community benefit

These upgrades align with Council’s Strategic Goals to build an empowered, healthy and connected community, and to support vibrant towns and villages. The improved stormwater infrastructure will provide essential protection for residents and businesses against future severe weather events.
