Overview
The Huon Agricultural Society Inc. conducts the annual Huon Show, a traditional country agricultural show held each November at the Ranelagh Recreation Grounds. The Show features judging of cattle and horses, home industries and school exhibits, woodchopping, and a large line-up of agricultural equipment and machinery, alongside a full day of entertainment for all ages.
The Show is a long-standing fixture for the Huon Valley, drawing strong support from exhibitors and the public across the area south of Hobart and beyond, with annual attendance estimated at around 10,000 to 13,000 patrons. It is run by a small volunteer Committee and has continued to grow while retaining the character of a typical country show.
The Show was first held at the Huonville Recreation Ground in 1947 and has been held at its present site in Ranelagh since 1956. Since the move, a number of improvements have been made to the grounds, including the Committee Room (Munro Room), a Show Office, the purchase of adjoining land, and a substantial power supply upgrade in 2008.
The Society is entirely volunteer run, with a committee of around 22 members supported by stewards on Show Day. New members and volunteers are always welcome, whether to join the Committee, assist on Show Day, or simply support the Show through membership. Anyone interested in joining, renewing their membership, or helping out on the day is encouraged to get in touch.
