Moss-covered tree trunks and rocks dominate a lush, green forest scene, with large ferns and dense foliage in the background.

Join community forest stewards for a short guided walk through the beautiful Franklin Forest.

Join us for our community guided walk through Franklin Forest. We’ll be peering at fungi, craning our heads to tall trees, cocking our ears to the calls of black cockatoos and keeping a watch for the resident pair of nesting wedgetail eagles. September will see the forest just nudging into spring. Like a sponge the forest has soaked up all the winter rain, storing moisture to see it through the drier months ahead. The moss loves it, the lichens love it. It will be past fungi frenzy season but we’ll still find a few. We might see the first sassafras coming into flower. Bring your beanies and warm layers. Franklin Forest is home to beautiful stands of leatherwood, large old swamp gums, and a myriad of wonders which we will slow down and contemplate on this guided walk. The walk will take up to two hours. It is about 2 km long but we will walk slowly to give us time to really take in and discuss our beautiful surroundings. Meet at the Living Boat Trust, Franklin.

PLEASE WASH YOUR FOOTWEAR – The best defence against soil carried pathogens and to protect our precious wild places. Always remove old mud from your boots before heading off for a bushwalk. Wear appropriate bushwalking gear; hiking shoes, beanies, warm layers and rain coats appropriate for the weather forecast, water, and snacks. Note that the track can be slippery and muddy if it’s been raining and involves some climbing over falling trees and therefore may not be suitable for all walkers. If you sometimes use walking poles bring them along. It’s always a few degrees cooler up on the hill and under the trees so bring an extra layer.
