Huon Valley residents came together on Sunday 10 August to explore the findings of our recent community waste survey and discover new ways to tackle waste in our region.

The community event provided an opportunity for residents to dive into the survey results and understand what they mean for our local area – particularly organic waste management.

Learning from the experts

A highlight of the event was a presentation from Tas Recycle, the Scheme Coordinator for Tasmania’s 10-cent container refund scheme. Attendees gained valuable insights into how the program works and its benefits for both the environment and the community.

The day also included a hands-on workshop focused on community waste action, giving residents an opportunity to have their say on practical ideas and tools to make a difference in their own neighbourhoods.

Report now available online

The Community Waste Survey Report is now live on Engage Huon Valley, alongside presentation slides from the event at engage.huonvalley.tas.gov.au/great-wheelie-bin-survey

This community-facing report complements the engagement report tabled at the May 2025 Council meeting with easy to digest stats and explanations.

Next steps for organic waste

The survey results are helping guide Council’s ongoing investigation into organic waste services and support options that would work best for our community. We’re carefully weighing up both the feasibility and potential impact of different approaches to ensure we make the right choice for the Huon Valley.

Thank you to our community

We want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who has participated in this project so far. Your input has been incredibly valuable and continues to shape our decision-making process. Community engagement like this helps ensure we develop waste management solutions that truly meet the needs of our residents.
