Thousands of native plants are provided free of cost each year to Huon Valley community groups and landowners for suitable revegetation projects.

Eligibility criteria

To be considered suitable, a revegetation project must aim to deliver one or more of the following outcomes:

  • A significant increase in native habitat, particularly in areas where natural regeneration is unlikely or where strategic planting can enhance habitat connectivity and ecosystem function.
  • Improvement or expansion of a threatened vegetation community or habitat for threatened species.
  • Contribution to the health of a waterway or coastal area through the establishment of a vegetation buffer or erosion control measures.
  • Integration into a broader strategic program focused on waterway, catchment, or weed management.
  • Enhancement of the amenity of a public space.
  • Farm improvements such as shelterbelts or dam improvement projects; note that private farm projects are more likely to be supported where they can provide a broader community or environmental benefit – e.g. use as a demonstration or monitoring site, also contributes to habitat connectivity etc.
  • Provision of an educational resource for a school or the wider community.
  • Projects may also be prioritised where they align with regional strategies* or make a key contribution to a current NRM project.

* See the Natural Resource Management Strategy for Southern Tasmania.

Suitable projects must also be:

  • Well-planned, with clear details on site preparation and post-planting maintenance.
  • Feasible, with the plant recipient having the capacity to implement the project and carry out ongoing maintenance, and with appropriate landowner

Please note that plants will not be provided for private gardens.

Application Process

Timeline: Expressions of interest are assessed in spring so plants suitable for the supported projects can be propagated ready for the following planting season (June–August 2026).

Capacity: The nursery has a limited capacity (approximately 4,000 plants per year) so not all revegetation projects may be supported. Priority will be given to Landcare groups, projects on public land, and projects that aim to deliver multiple environmental outcomes.

How to Apply: To request native plants for the 2026 planting season (winter–early spring), complete the application form.

Planning Support

Planning a successful revegetation project

A well-planned project is more likely to succeed and receive plant support. Our revegetation plan template guides you through the key considerations including site assessment, species selection, timing, and long-term maintenance planning.

Use this template to:

  • Assess your site conditions and identify suitable native species
  • Plan site preparation, planting methods, and ongoing maintenance
  • Document your project for the application process
  • Track progress and results over time
