The Huon Valley Council has wrapped up a successful series of community events as part of National Road Safety Week, engaging staff, students, and community members with powerful messages about staying safe on our roads.

Community BBQ brought road safety message to residents

Earlier in the week, the community gathered for a free sausage sizzle, creating the perfect opportunity for residents to connect and discuss road safety issues affecting the Huon Valley. The event saw many familiar faces stop by to grab a snag and engage in meaningful conversations about keeping our roads safe, all while enjoying beautiful sunny weather.

Staff breakfast highlighted road safety at work

Council staff donned orange on Wednesday as Mayor Sally Doyle addressed the importance of getting home safely every day. The early morning staff breakfast emphasized that whether driving home or working on the roads, safety remains the top priority for our council workforce.

Dramatic demonstration captivated high school students

In perhaps the most impactful event of the week, Huonville High School students witnessed a live multi-car crash extraction demonstration. In collaboration with local emergency services, including Tasmania Fire Service, Tasmania Police, ambulance crews, and SES, students observed firsthand how emergency responders use specialized equipment like the Jaws of Life to rescue crash victims.

The demonstration was so compelling that even Huon Primary School students gathered at the fence to watch. This eye-opening experience highlighted the extensive resources required during road emergencies and the far-reaching consequences of road accidents.

Supporting new drivers

The Council also promoted the Gearing Up program during the events – a free initiative helping learner drivers overcome financial barriers and find supervising drivers to complete their required hours. Those interested in participating as learners or mentors can contact Mandi at 0427 317 815.

The Council extends sincere thanks to the dedicated team members who organized these events and to all community members who participated in National Road Safety Week activities. Through education and awareness, we continue working toward safer roads throughout the Huon Valley.
