The Southbridge Waste Transfer Station is closed for the remainder of the day (Wednesday, February 18) due to a compactor issue. This closure is necessary to maintain safety for workers and the community.

We apologise for any inconvenience and will provide an update on reopening as soon as more information is available.

UPDATE 2:30PM Wednesday 18 February:

The Huonville Reuse Shop will reopen tomorrow (Thursday 19 February).

Staff will be back onsite tomorrow to begin a major clean-up of the compactor area, and we will reopen the Southbridge Waste Transfer Station as soon as it is safe to do so. We’ll provide a further update tomorrow when it’s ready to reopen.

The Southbridge Waste Transfer Station remains closed due to a fire in the compactor (still under investigation).

Please help prevent fires:

This is an important reminder to dispose of waste correctly and do not place combustible or hazardous items in your kerbside recycling or general waste bins. These items can be crushed during collection/compaction and may cause explosions or hard-to-extinguish fires.

Common items that must NOT go in kerbside bins include:

  • Lithium-ion batteries
  • E-waste (vapes, phones, laptops, toys with hidden batteries)
  • Aerosol cans (even partially full)
  • Gas bottles/cylinders (BBQ/camping canisters)
  • Flammable chemicals/liquids (solvents, thinners, fuels)
  • Hot ashes/coals (from fireplaces/BBQs)
