Huon Valley Council Medical Services is launching a new monthly Women’s Health Clinic at the Geeveston Medical Centre, providing longer, dedicated appointments in a welcoming and inclusive environment for people seeking reproductive and women’s health care.

The clinic is being spearheaded by Registrar Dr Melissa Catanzarite, who has a special interest in women’s health. It will be staffed by an all-female team including Nurse Practitioner Gayle Rusher and Registered Nurse Lisa Hall.

Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle said the clinic is an important step toward improving access to care locally. “We’re proud to be launching this new Women’s Health Clinic in Geeveston because local women deserve access to quality, respectful healthcare close to home,” Mayor Doyle said.

Dr Catanzarite said the new clinic is designed to provide an environment where patients feel safe and supported. “Women’s health has historically been under-researched and under-recognised, and that has real impacts on people’s lives,” Dr Catanzarite said. “This clinic will provide longer appointments and a dedicated space to listen carefully, take symptoms seriously and work with patients on practical, evidence-based care.”

Mayor Doyle said the clinic will also reduce the need for travel outside the Valley. “Many people currently have to travel to Kingston or Hobart for specialised women’s health services,” Mayor Doyle said. “This new clinic will save local patients a long drive and make it easier to access care when it’s needed.”

The clinic is open to any woman in the Huon Valley and is also inclusive of non-binary people, trans women and trans men who may wish to seek support for reproductive system health concerns in a safe and inclusive setting.

The clinic will also communicate with women’s regular GP, if they have one, to ensure continuity of care. It will provide support for a variety of conditions and services including:

  • Endometriosis and period concerns
  • Cervical screening
  • IUDs and contraception options
  • STI testing and treatment
  • Chronic issues such as persistent pelvic pain and pelvic floor pain
  • Perimenopause and menopause care
  • Breast health
  • Pelvic prolapse

The Women’s Health Clinic is supported by funding from Primary Health Tasmania through the Australian Governments General Practice Incentive Fund.

It will run monthly on Fridays from 10:00am to 6:00pm, with the first clinic on Friday 27 March.
