Huon Valley Council is proud to be partnering again with Safer Australian Roads and Highway Group to support National Road Safety Week (NRSW) – a vital annual initiative dedicated to preventing road trauma and saving lives.
National Road Safety Week comes at a sobering time for Tasmania, following the deadliest month on our roads in over 15 years, with 11 fatalities in April – bringing the state’s road toll to 20 so far in 2025.
“Last year in Tasmania, 32 lives were lost and 300 people were seriously injured on our roads. These aren’t just numbers – they represent families forever changed and communities left grieving,” said Mayor Sally Doyle. “With the recent incident at Grove intersection affecting our own community, I’m asking every Huon Valley resident to renew their commitment to safer driving. Together, we can make a difference on our roads and save lives.”
Achieving safer roads is a shared responsibility, and together we can make a difference.
To mark the week, Council will host a series of events to raise awareness and encourage everyone to take the NRSW pledge including a breakfast for Council staff with the message to Get Home Safe from Work, a visit to Huonville High School featuring representatives from SES, Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Police and a free community BBQ.
Also look out for our variable message boards throughout the Huon Valley with important road safety tips.
National Road Safety Week runs from 11-18 May 2025.
Take the pledge today and help us create a safer future on Tasmania’s roads. To find out more about National Road Safety Week and make your pledge, visit roadsafetyweek.com.au.
