Huon Valley Council has officially commenced the Cygnet Safety Improvement Program—a three-year program designed to improve parking, traffic flow, pedestrian safety, and accessibility in the Cygnet township.
Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle said, “Cygnet’s town centre is a special place where our community comes together. We thank residents and business owners who have advocated for these improvements and look forward to delivering a safer, more accessible township for everyone.”
The program will deliver a range of important outcomes for the community, including:
- Widening of Lymington Road
- Delivery of additional off-street parking spaces
- Inclusion of new on-street disability parking spaces
- Safer pedestrian crossings
- Widening sections of Mary Street to improve traffic safety and efficiency
One of the first actions will be the widening of a 600-metre section of Lymington Road, between the footbridge and the Cannery. This will allow a centreline to be painted, improving safety for all road users.
Investigation and scoping of the full works program is underway. A draft concept design for proposed safety improvements to Mary Street will be prepared and presented to the community for consultation in early 2026, giving residents the opportunity to provide input.
The Cygnet Safety Improvement Program is supported by the Tasmanian Government through the Department of State Growth.
The commencement of the project follows a successful renegotiation of $5 million granted to Council in 2021. The original funding allocation was not sufficient to deliver a new road that was intended to address road and pedestrian safety and congestion issues in Mary Street. Council has used recent community feedback, including from speed reduction, pedestrian crossing and township structure plan consultations, to amend the project to deliver sensible, cost-effective measures that will meet community expectations for safer, calmer main roads in Cygnet.
