Council is thrilled to announce the successful implementation of a significantly expanded CCTV surveillance network, delivering improved community safety for Huonville, Cygnet, and Geeveston.

Delivered in partnership with the Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT), this project responds to our community’s concerns – in a recent survey Huon Valley residents named safety as their top priority for a liveable community.

Mayor Sally Doyle said: “By investing in technology that discourages the small number of people who cause problems, we hope to prevent damaging behaviour. Expanding our CCTV network shows our commitment to making public spaces safe for everyone.”

Inspector Colin Riley of Tasmania Police Kingston Division said: “The enhancement of the CCTV capacity is an exceptional development for community safety. It will aid us to quickly identify and apprehend offenders when matters occur. We are very grateful for the leadership shown in this extremely worthwhile initiative by the Huon Valley Council and LGAT. The community will be the net beneficiaries from this fantastic initiative.”

All cameras are carefully positioned to only film public areas and protect residents’ privacy at home. Footage will only be shared with Tasmania Police when required for safety or investigations.

The expanded CCTV network brings new and upgraded cameras to known hotspots for vandalism and antisocial behaviour, including:

  • Huonville: Improvement of the existing CCTV system and additional cameras at the Esplanade playground and facilities.
  • Cygnet: Integrated CCTV network combining the Skate Park cameras and a new CCTV system at Loongana Park and main street.
  • Geeveston: Brand new CCTV system at Heritage Park and other key community areas in Geeveston.
