The Huon Valley is gearing up for warmer weather, and with that comes the important task of keeping our roadsides safe, tidy, and fire-ready.

From 22 September,Council will begin its annual Roadside Spray Program (weather permitting) to help control weeds and long grass along our road verges.

With over 500km or rural roads, managing roadside vegetation is an important part of keeping our community safe. Regular spraying reduces fire hazards, improves visibility for drivers, and ensures drains can flow freely when the rain comes.

If you wish to avoid your roadside frontage being sprayed with herbicide, you must ensure the front of your property is well maintained. This means:

  • Grass and weeds within 2 metres of the road shoulder (or to your boundary fence if that’s closer) need to be kept to a height of less than 200mm
  • All weeds must be controlled
  • Road frontages should be kept neat and tidy
  • Roadside drains and pathways must remain clear and working

Many rural residents choose to be on the Spray Program Notification Register, which means Council will contact you to advise you of when our spray program begins and remind you of what you need to do to maintain your roadside frontage.

Emails and letters to those on the Spray Program Notification Register will be sent out shortly.

To join the register for future years, fill in the registration form here: Management of Vegetation in Council Road Reserves – Huon Valley Council

If you have any questions about the spray program, please contact Council’s Infrastructure and Assets Department on (03) 6264 0300 or by email at hvc@huonvalley.tas.gov.au.

By working together, we can keep the Huon Valley safe, well maintained, and beautiful.
