Huon Valley Council is joining forces with local emergency services crews to deliver a powerful live demonstration of a multi-car extraction for more than 100 Huonville High School students for National Road Safety Week.
The event will take place on Thursday 15 May 2025 at 11am at the Huonville Swimming Pool carpark, which will transform into the scene of a two-car collision using donated damaged vehicles. The carpark will be closed for the day.
Students will witness firsthand how representatives from each emergency service responds—arriving in real time with flashing lights and sirens, to safely remove and assist vehicle occupants. The live action scenario offers an eye-opening experience for young people who are soon to become drivers themselves.
“We want our young people to truly understand the immediate and long-term impacts of road crashes, not only on those injured but also on their families, friends and the emergency personnel who respond,” Mayor Doyle said.
“Bringing together representatives from fire, police, ambulance and SES allows students to see just how many people are involved when there’s a serious accident on our roads, and how vital every second and every role is during a real emergency.”
The Council is encouraging students to reflect on their own responsibilities as emerging drivers, as well as the roles parents, educators and the wider community play in supporting their safety.
“Ultimately, we all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. We hope this experience will help students make safer choices behind the wheel and encourage discussion about what support they need from all of us as they become new drivers.”
