Huon Valley Landcare volunteers have been recognised as Tasmania’s leading environmental contributors, dedicating more time and effort than any other municipality to caring for local waterways, and ecosystems.

New figures released by Landcare Tasmania reveal that in 2024, Huon Valley Landcarers delivered an extraordinary $540,000 worth of volunteer hours—more than half the total value contributed by all Landcare groups across the state.

These figures, drawn from Landcare Tasmania’s 2025 Membership Renewal Survey, highlight the enormous social, environmental, and economic impact of their work.

Huon Valley Mayor Sally Doyle praised the volunteers’ incredible efforts: “Our Landcarers are true community champions. Their hard work not only protects and restores our natural ecosystems but also builds community connection and resilience. These numbers show just how powerful local people can be when they come together for a shared purpose.”

“From restoring waterways and planting trees, to tackling weeds and creating new wildlife habitat, Landcare groups across the region are creating lasting benefits for the environment,” Mayor Doyle said.

Ingrid Harder, Co-convenor of the Port Cygnet Land and Watercare Group, said: “I love Landcaring because it’s a chance to work with others who share a passion and commitment to caring for the land. As a favourite childhood book once taught me, one thing we must do when we grow up is make the world more beautiful.”

Council is proud to support the incredible work of Landcare volunteers across the Huon Valley. We do this through partnerships and community events, by providing native plant seedlings, and through our Natural Resource Management Grants Program.
