Huon Valley Council is launching a major community engagement initiative, inviting everyone in Cygnet to have their say and shape the future direction of their town.
The Land Use and Development Strategy forecasts Cygnet will need 2,500 new homes by 2046. Residents are being called on to guide the development of a new Township Structure Plan for Cygnet—a plan that will determine how the town grows, evolves, and stays uniquely Cygnet for generations to come.
The Structure Plan will build on the direction set by the community through the Community Vision and the Huon Valley Land Use and Development Strategy and incorporates the ideas and feedback already provided through these important documents.
Once finalised, the Cygnet Township Structure Plan will be embedded in the planning scheme to provide controls on future housing development, streets, public spaces, heritage, services, and community facilities that the community has been asking for. Locals are also encouraged to share their aspirations for key sites, such as the Old School Farm and former Council Depot.
Through this collaborative process, community feedback will directly inform a draft Structure Plan, which will be released for public consultation later this year before integration into the Huon Valley Local Provisions Schedule of the Tasmanian Planning Scheme.
“We’re here to listen, and we want big ideas from people of every age,” said Mayor Sally Doyle. “That’s why we’re working closely with Cygnet schools—so our young people, who will inherit tomorrow’s Cygnet, can actively share their hopes and creativity. This whole process is about inspiring the community to take the lead. It’s a vital opportunity for everyone who loves Cygnet to have a real say in the town’s future, and to help protect the liveability and spirit that make this place so special.”
