Huon Valley Council is drafting a new Municipal Area By-law 2025 to simplify and modernise how community services and facilities are managed.

The new by-law will combine four existing by-laws into a single, streamlined set of rules. This will reduce duplication, ensure consistency, and make it easier for the community to understand their rights and responsibilities.

Most existing rules – such as parking, waste collection, permits and use of sports and community facilities – will remain the same. Improvements include:

  • Online applications for permits and bookings
  • Clearer animal keeping guidelines in residential areas
  • Stronger environmental protections for waterways and infrastructure
  • Fairer and more consistent penalties, with options for appeal

Some outdated or duplicate rules will be removed, such as separate caravan occupation rules (now covered by planning laws).

Council is inviting the community to share feedback during a three-week engagement period before moving into the formal statutory process.
