Huon Valley Council is working closely with our valued volunteer hall management committees to remove risks and improve the operation of local community halls, making them more vibrant, accessible, and sustainable spaces for everyone.
This weekend, Council representatives including staff and Councillors met with 29 of our hall committee volunteers from across the Huon Valley to discuss upcoming changes and next steps.
The meeting followed Council’s comprehensive 2024 Halls Review, which included the voices of 138 community meeting participants and 92 survey respondents.
The review identified that the community members and volunteers provide huge value to the halls, fostering community activation and connections. However, the current hall hire process is complex and places a large burden on volunteers. It is generally supported for Council to take over key responsibilities like bookings and maintenance.
“We are grateful for the tireless work of our hall committee volunteers, whose dedication have been vital to our community,” said Mayor Sally Doyle. “We’re committed to working with them through this transition period and encouraging community involvement as we move to a new model.”
The implementation of the new model and its transition plan will be decided by Council at its June 2025 Council Meeting.
