About the Huon Valley
The Huon Valley retains a beauty, charm and heritage-like feel whilst being progressive, innovative and creative, it is well known for its long history of apple growing, craft cider makers, boutique winemakers, quality salmon producers, and other homegrown produce.
The population of the Huon Valley is spread across five main townships of Huonville, Franklin, Cygnet, Geeveston and Dover. Other towns include Southport, Glen Huon, Judbury, Ranelagh, Mountain River, Pelverata, Cradoc and Verona Sands.
Across the Valley we have many industries, schools, sporting and recreational facilities, services clubs, supermarkets and health services. Huonville is the major commercial and business centre for the area.
Among the diverse local industries are agriculture, aquaculture, fishing, forestry, and tourism. We have a population of approximately 17,966 people and have a Valley that is known for its incredible natural beauty, with the pristine Huon River, Far South coastline, mountain ranges, World Heritage-listed national parks and iconic bushwalks.
Huon Valley Council operates from the Customer Service Centre in Huonville, with many facilities and services located across the Valley. The area has over 10,000 rateable properties and the Council has an estimated consolidated income of approximately $30 million.
Council employs around 167 full time equivalent staff in managing and delivering a wide range of services across our total area of 5,497km2 including environment and development services, infrastructure services and community services.
Facilities managed by the Council include waste management, sporting facilities and swimming pools, child care, medical centres, community halls and the Huon Valley Hub.

The Role
As the Waste Transfer Station Operator you will:
- Ensure the waste transfer stations are kept in a clean and tidy state and supervise the appropriate use of the facilities by patrons
- Ensure that patrons use the recycling stations appropriately to avoid contamination, including regularly inspecting the recycling bins.
- Provide general waste management advice to patrons.
- Identify waste types and charge appropriate fees for disposal
- Identify and recover recyclable materials suitable for resale from the waste transfer facilities
Mandatory Requirements
Skills & Experience
The successful applicant will have the following:
- Minimum preferred completion of Year 10, Basic vocational training e.g. pre-apprenticeship, Traineeship certificate
- Previous experience in the operation of a waste transfer station
- Previous experience in cash handling
- A demonstrated understanding of waste diversion and minimisation practices
- Physical capacity to undertake manual labour within the scope of responsibilities
- Demonstrated understanding of Work Health and Safety principles

- Manage the update and design of Council’s digital platforms including the Council website, and intranet

- Regularly review content and engage with content owners to ensure the currency of the platform

Skills & Experience
The successful applicant will have the following:
- Completion of relevant Certificate or Diploma level qualification and/or relevant extensive practical experience
- Demonstrated strong experience in producing high quality community information and promotional material
- Excellent working knowledge of design software packages, especially Adobe Creative Suite and Word Press (or similar), as well as proficiency in the Microsoft 365 suite
- Demonstrated project management, and time management skills
