The Blackwood trees at the corner of the Huonville recreation ground (corner of Heron Street and Tennis Court Road) have been removed for safety reasons. Following an assessment in August last year the six mature Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) trees were found to have been compromised by previous power line clearance works.
The Blackwoods are highly susceptible to losing limbs in high winds, posing too much of a danger to the children using the ground for athletics, pedestrians, playground users and vehicles that park there.
Safety of children and residents is something we can’t ignore and we are looking at replacing them with advanced deciduous trees in the next two to three months. The new trees will be chosen based on their suitability and mature height that will allow light in winter and shade for the rest of the year.
