Huon Valley Mayor Peter Coad is reminding anyone planning to study in the areas of medicine, nursing or allied health to consider applying for the Greg Norris Memorial Health Scholarship.

Applications  for the scholarship close on 29 January 2016.

“The scholarship, administered by Huon Valley Council, acknowledges the passion that former mayor, the late Greg Norris, had for providing high-quality medical services for the Huon Valley,” Cr Coad said.

The Greg Norris Memorial Scholarship provides $5,000 to help with the cost of study.

Applicants will need to demonstrate that they would find it difficult to access further education without receiving the scholarship support.

The scholarship is only available to people who live in the Huon Valley local government area at the time of application. Preference will be given to an applicant whose study may lead to a future career in rural healthcare.

“I hope eligible local residents with an interest in a healthcare career will apply for the scholarship and go on to work in the Huon Valley when they complete their study,” Cr Coad said.

Greg Norris was the first mayor of the Huon Valley Council after the Huon, Port Cygnet and Esperance councils amalgamated in 1993, a position he held until he passed away in 2001.

The second scholarship round is now open with Applications closing on 29 January 2016.
