The summer harvest season will be upon us before we know it, so it’s time for another information session! Click here to view the poster.
Get Picking is a project run by Geeveston Community Centre. It connects local fruit growers in the Huon Valley with individuals and job seekers wanting work during the harvest season. In order to assist with gaining employment with local farmers, we are running induction sessions to cover the basics of fruit picking, seasonal employment and the local area.
Fruit picking is tough manual job and needs to be taken seriously. Farmers have expectations that fruit will be picked at a high quality and at a reasonable pace. For this reason most farmers offer a payment arrangement by quantity of fruit picked – you will be paid for the quantity of fruit picked. Early starts are necessary and dedication to the position is required. The farms are often located away from major public transport routes so having your own transport is a bonus. Get Picking will be running several mini-vans so please indicate if you would like a spot.
The harvest season is beginning now and will run until the end of May. Farmers generally give preference to pickers who show promise, and are able to pick efficiently.
The session will cover the basics of the fruit picking industry, pay rates and arrangements, transport options throughout the Valley and conclude with an orchard visit.
