Seniors Health Acitivities

The Huon Valley Council operates a number of activities for seniors throughout the year.

These include:

Monday Mind Games

Monday Mind Games is a great opportunity to meet people, have fun and keep your mind active!

Come along and play a range of games including Mah Jong, Cribbage, Euchre and Scrabble.

Monday Mind Games  is held from 11.45am to 2.45pm at the Huon Community Health Centre, 7-9 Sale Street in Huonville

Participation is by a gold coin donation.

  

Mayor's Afternoon Tea

The Mayor's Afternoon Tea was held on Wednesday 2 October 2013 between 1 - 3pm at the Huonville Bowls Club. The special guest entertainers were Day Star Duo.

The afternoon was full of fun, entertainment, laughter and delicious food.

Day Star Duo will be back to perform at the Mayor's Afternoon Tea in 2014. Date to be advised.

Senior's Health Expo

The Senior's Health Expo was held on Friday 29 June 2012 and was a great opportunity for people to try out different activities as well as see displays of products and services available for use in and around your home.

The next Senior's Health Expo will be next held on Wednesday 4 March 2015.

Stroke Safe Ambassador Presentations

The Huon Valley Council organised for the Stroke Foundation Stroke Safe Ambassador to talk about stroke prevention in November 2013

Each session covered:

  • What stroke is
  • The effects of stroke
  • How to prevent a stroke
  • How to recognise a stroke
  • What to do if someone is having a stroke.

Seniors First Aid Course

The Seniors First Aid courses were held in July 2013 at Huonville, Cygnet, Geeveston and Dover with 45 participants. The courses were conducted by a registered first aid trainer and covered a range of subjects including asthma, heart attack, stroke, choking, diabetes and CPR.

 

Is it Dementia

They Royal Hobart Hospital's Aged Care Team, the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre and the Huon Valley Council are hosting an information session for the Huon Valley Community to find out more about dementia. Items that will be discussed are:

  • How to recognise the early signs of dementia
  • How dementia can affect you and your family
  • What services are available in your area to help you continue to live independently in your home
